To ride pets in Steal an Egg, you first have to turn a pet into a mount by feeding it a Star. After that, open the equipped pets menu on the right side of the screen, find your mounted pet, and press the green Ride button. A Dismount button appears while you’re riding.
That’s the full loop. Most of the confusion comes from the first step, because a freshly hatched pet has no Ride button at all. The rest of this guide covers what you need before you can ride, what to do when the button doesn’t show up, and whether riding is worth a Star.
Why Can’t You Ride Your Pets Right Away?
Because riding isn’t a default pet feature. Update 8 made mounts a separate step, and no pet is rideable until you convert it. Hatching a rare pet won’t unlock the Ride button on its own.
The conversion uses an item called a Star. You feed one Star to one pet, and that pet becomes a mount for good. If you don’t have one yet, get a Star first. It comes from the free nightly Star Drop or from the Star Handler NPC at spawn for Robux.
One quick clarification before you go further. Ride A Pet is a completely separate Roblox game with its own rideable pets. Everything here is about Steal an Egg only.
Step 1: Turn a Pet Into a Mount
With a Star in your inventory, the conversion is quick:
- Equip the Star.
- Walk up to a pet in your pen. A prompt appears to feed it the Star.
- Confirm on the Apply Star screen. A warning shows first.
- Click Yes. The pet becomes a mount and the Star is used up.
Read the warning properly. Creating a mount is permanent, and each Star only works once. If you need a second mount, you need a second Star.
Step 2: How to Ride Your Pet
Once the pet is a mount, riding takes two taps:
- Open the equipped pets menu on the right side of the screen.
- Find your mounted pet. A green Ride button now sits above the Unequip button.
- Press Ride and you hop on.
Look in the menu rather than waiting for a prompt in the world. That’s where the Ride option has been reported.
How Do You Dismount?
While you’re riding, a Dismount button appears on screen. Press it and you step off.

Which Pets Can You Ride?
Any pet you own can become a mount. There’s no special “rideable species” list, and you don’t need to hunt down a particular egg. That includes common pets, though spending a Star on a low earner rarely makes sense.
There’s one limit that catches players out. In early testing, only pets equipped in your pen could be ridden. A pet sitting in storage didn’t show the Ride option. This is reported behavior rather than an official rule, so it may change. Until it does, equip your mount before you go looking for the button.
A mounted pet also keeps working. You can leave it in your pen and it keeps earning money while you ride it, so riding doesn’t cost you income.
Ride Button Missing? Check These First
If the button isn’t showing, work through this list in order. The first two come directly from how the system works. The rest are logical checks, since the feature is too new for a full list of known bugs.
| What to check | Why it matters |
| Did you actually use a Star on this pet? | Only converted pets get a Ride button. Hatching alone doesn’t do it. |
| Did you press Yes on the Apply Star screen? | The conversion only completes after you confirm. |
| Is the pet equipped in your pen? | Reported behavior: unequipped pets don’t show the option. |
| Are you looking in the equipped pets menu? | The button lives there, above Unequip. |
| Did you convert the pet you meant to? | If you used the Star on a different pet, that one is your mount now. |
If all five check out and the button still won’t appear, rejoin a fresh server and look again. That fix is untested, but it’s the standard step for any missing-UI problem in Roblox.
What Does Riding Actually Do?
Less than you might hope. Mounts don’t boost your Speed, change how you carry a heavy egg, or let you skip a biome gate. They’re a visual flex with an aura, and they let you ride around the biomes instead of running.
Some early guides describe riding as a way to reach egg nests faster. That’s not confirmed, and the most careful testing found no gameplay benefit at all. Don’t plan your Speed upgrades around a mount. If you’re working toward the 50B Speed gate on the Enchanted Forest, treadmill training is still the only real path.
Riding in the Racing Event
Riding has one clear use: the Racing Event. A race portal opens every 30 minutes in one of the biomes, and you can spot it through the announcement tab. The race runs three laps with speed boost tracks and power-ups, and it plays a lot like a kart race.

A win earns 1 Win and 2,500 Trophies. Trophies buy boosters, the Nitro Mutation and a Racing Bat, and Wins unlock a pass of racer pets. There’s no minimum Speed requirement, so a brand-new player can enter.
One detail is still murky. You start with an Ostrich as your base racer, and reports differ on how your own mounted pet fits into a race. Check the in-game prompts when the portal opens. One report also says the event only runs for a limited time.
Is a Mount Worth a Star?
If you want the cosmetic flex or you plan to join races, yes. If you’re chasing income or Speed, no, because a mount adds neither.

The smart play is one mount on your highest-earning pet or your favorite one. It keeps earning, and you never regret the permanent choice. If you’re still building that pet’s value, finish any mutation work on its egg first, such as the Enchanted Mutation, before you spend the Star.
What Could Change After Update 8?
The next drop is the Halloween Dimension Expansion, and mounts could pick up new uses with it. Nothing is confirmed. Keep an eye on the Steal an Egg updates log, and check the mounts update page for how this feature was first announced.
To test your own mount, load into the Roblox experience, equip the pet, and open the pets menu.
