The Phantom Express is the haunted train in Steal an Egg‘s Halloween event, and it runs on a loop: it pulls into the Haunted Swamp station roughly every 30 minutes, and anyone holding a Phantom Express Ticket can climb aboard. The ride ends in a separate ghost area where you vacuum up spirits for Souls, then trade them for a chance at the Spectral Mutation.
You can’t buy the ticket, and you can’t board without it. It comes from the quest chain that starts with Echo the ghost dog. Below is the full route, from first quest step to the final mutation roll, plus the numbers worth knowing before you spend time on it.
What Is the Phantom Express in Steal an Egg?
It’s the event’s one repeatable activity that has nothing to do with Candy Corn. The train takes you out of the main map to a ghost area where the only objective is catching spirits with a Ghost Vacuum. Every catch pays Souls, and Souls buy a Spectral Mutation consumable at the Soul Shrine.
Think of it as three layers stacked on one another:
- The unlock: a one-time ticket from Echo’s quest.
- The ride: a 30-minute loop you board at the station.
- The payoff: Souls, then a 25% shot at the mutation per consumable.
Skip the first layer and the other two never open, which is why most players treat the quest as a prerequisite rather than a side activity.
What Do You Need Before You Can Board?
Check these first, because missing one costs you a full 30-minute wait:
- Access to the Halloween Dimension. Use the portal beside the Trails Shop at spawn. One report lists a 2.5 million Speed requirement for entry, so if the portal refuses you, read the requirement shown on it.
- Echo’s Memories finished, meaning all four lost items returned.
- The fishing minigame cleared all the way to the treasure chest.
- A train that’s actually in the station. The ticket alone isn’t enough if the boarding window has closed.
How Do You Get the Phantom Express Ticket?
The ticket is a quest reward, and it only drops at the very end of the chain. Returning Echo’s items doesn’t give it to you, and neither does holding the rod.

- Start Echo’s Memories. Echo is the blue ghost dog near the witch-hat house and three tombs in the Graveyard. Talk to him and the tracker reads “Find the dog’s lost things (0/4).”
- Find the four items. Reports place them at the Big Pumpkin Altar (Favorite Toy), the swamp grass and rocks near the tracks (Chewed Bone), across the railway by a large tree (Old Collar), and by the Abandoned Manor gate (Old Photograph). Our full walkthrough of Echo’s lost items covers each spot.
- Follow Echo to the Ghost Fisherman at Gilbert’s Hut on the Haunted Swamp pier. He gives you the rod. If you want the details on that step, here’s how to get the Haunted Rod.
- Cast into the glowing ripples and win the short fishing minigame. A creature drags you underwater.
- Steer with A and D to dodge sea mines. Short taps give you better control than holding a key. You have three lives.
- Open the chest at the end. A “Phantom Express Ticket Unlocked” message confirms it.
You only need one ticket. After your first successful boarding, later rides don’t ask for a new one, and missing a departure doesn’t mean redoing the quest.
Phantom Express Schedule: When Does the Train Arrive?
The train stops at the Haunted Swamp railway station, on the right side of the Corrupted Realm map, at about :00 and :30 each hour. It doesn’t wait around. When it arrives, a banner reads “The Phantom Express has arrived!” and a “Boarding Closes In” countdown begins.

| Detail | What to expect |
| Frequency | About every 30 minutes |
| Typical times | Around the hour and half-hour |
| Location | Haunted Swamp station, right side of the map |
| Warning | Arrival banner plus a boarding countdown |
| Ticket needed | First ride only |
Timing can drift between servers, so trust the station countdown over your own clock. If you’re not near the platform when the banner appears, you’ll likely miss the window, because the train leaves rather than idling until the next run.
How to Board Without Missing It
Stand on the platform under the Phantom Express sign and use the Board Train prompt. A “Ticket punched! All aboard!” message means it worked, and the train carries you to the ghost area.
If the prompt doesn’t show up, you’re either off the platform or the train isn’t in yet. Wait for the next arrival countdown instead of spamming the button. A smart habit is to farm Candy Corn near the station between runs, so you’re already standing there when the banner fires. Our guide to farming Candy Corn covers what pays best while you wait.
The Ghost Area: Ghost Vacuum and Souls
When the train drops you off, step into the glowing green circle and use the Pick Up Vacuum prompt. Aim the Ghost Vacuum at floating spirits to capture them. Each ghost type pays a fixed number of Souls, which the game also calls Haunted Spirits.
| Ghost | Souls per capture | Catches for 500 Souls | Catches for 1,000 Souls |
| Ghouler (boss) | 225+ | 3 | 5 |
| Vengeful Spirit | 150 | 4 | 7 |
| Haunted Spirit | 35 | 15 | 29 |
| Lost Spirit | 10 | 50 | 100 |
The gap between ghost types is the whole strategy. A few Ghouler or Vengeful Spirit catches buy what dozens of Lost Spirits would. The Ghouler is a boss with around 900 HP, and reports say the player who deals the most damage gets a much bigger payout, in the range of 1,000+ Souls. Go for it whenever it spawns, and only vacuum the small spirits when nothing better is nearby.
Souls are separate from Candy Corn. Fighting monsters back in the Graveyard or Haunted Swamp won’t earn them, so if the vacuum isn’t paying out, check that you’re in the train’s ghost area.
The Soul Shrine: Price, Odds and the Spectral Mutation
The Soul Shrine sits to the right of the station in the ghost area. Interact with it to open the Soul Extractor, which shows your Soul balance next to the price. Trading Souls always works. The roll on your egg is where it can fail.
| Property | Reported value |
| Cost per consumable | 500 Souls in newer builds (1,000 at launch) |
| Chance to apply | 25% per consumable |
| Income multiplier | x2.75 |
| Trade guaranteed? | Yes, the purchase always works |
These figures come from community reports, not a developer announcement, and the price has already changed once. Read the number on the Extractor before you start farming.

To use it, hold the consumable at your base, walk up to the egg you want, and choose Apply Mutation. A “Spectral mutation applied!” banner means it landed. If nothing shows, the roll failed and the item is gone.
How Many Tries Does Spectral Realistically Take?
A 25% chance doesn’t promise a hit on the fourth try. The math looks like this:
| Consumables used | Chance of at least one Spectral |
| 1 | 25% |
| 4 | about 68% |
| 8 | about 90% |
On average you’ll need about four consumables, which is roughly 2,000 Souls at the 500 price, or about nine Ghouler-sized catches. Save the rolls for an egg you actually plan to keep, because failed attempts still use up the item. For context on how it compares with other boosts, our Enchanted Mutation guide breaks down another mutation’s recipe and multiplier.
When the Phantom Express Doesn’t Work
- No ticket after returning the items: make sure the counter reads 4/4 and your fishing run actually reached the chest.
- No Board Train prompt: stand on the platform and wait for the next arrival banner.
- A lost item won’t pick up: walk around the object to retrigger the prompt, or hop to a new server.
- No Souls from the vacuum: confirm you’re in the ghost area reached by train.
Is the Phantom Express Worth Your Time?
If you care about egg income, yes. A x2.75 multiplier is the biggest event reward you can earn without Robux, and the only cost is time. If you only want event pets, the train is optional, since the 2,250 Candy Corn egg is a separate path, as explained in the Halloween Dimension overview.
Three things aren’t settled, and they could change mid-event: the Soul price (500 or 1,000), the exact multiplier, and the entry requirement for the dimension. Check updates if the numbers in your game don’t match this page, and we’ll revise it when they shift.
