To use the Shady Scarecrow, walk up to him at the Fall Market event area, pick one seed from your inventory, and hand it over. He plants it in the patch beside him and spits out one random reward. The rarer your seed (and the better its variant), the higher your seed score and the better your odds. After every submission there is a 10-minute cooldown before you can feed him again.
The prizes are worth the trip. Everything from a Rosy Root Seed to Autumn Eggs and Autumn Seed Packs is on the table, and the jackpots are the Divine Scarecrow pet and the Maple Melt Seed, which you can’t get anywhere else.
How Does the Shady Scarecrow Work?
The Shady Scarecrow is an NPC added in the third part of the Fall Finale event. It works like a seed-for-reward exchange. You give it a seed, it gives you a random prize.
Here is the full loop:
- Open your inventory and equip the seed you want to submit.
- Walk up to the Shady Scarecrow and interact with him.
- Hand over the seed. He plants it in the patch next to him.
- He spits out one random reward based on your seed score.
- Wait out the 10-minute cooldown, then repeat.
One seed, one reward. There is no way to stack several seeds into a single roll, so your cooldown timer is the real limit on how many tries you get.
What Is Seed Score (and Why It Decides Everything)?
Your seed’s rarity and its variant combine into a seed score from 1 to 10. A higher score shifts the odds away from the cheap rewards and toward the rare ones. A plain, low-rarity seed sits near the bottom. A rare seed with a strong variant sits near the top.

The rule is simple. Rarity raises your score, and variants raise it further. That is why feeding a Carrot and feeding a Transcendent crop are two completely different rolls.
Shady Scarecrow Rewards and Drop Chances
There are eight possible rewards. Here are the confirmed numbers at the lowest seed score (1):
| Reward | Chance at Seed Score 1 |
| 1x Rosy Root Seed | 35.5% |
| 1x Autumn Seed Pack | 20% |
| 1x Carved Swingseat | 9% |
| 3x Autumn Seed Pack | 4% |
| Scarecrow (Divine pet) | 0.3% |
| Maple Melt Seed | 0.1% |
The 1x Autumn Egg and 4x Autumn Egg rewards are also in the pool, but I could not confirm their exact low-score percentages, so I’m leaving them out rather than guessing.
Climbing the score ladder changes the picture fast. At seed score 6, Rosy Root drops to 28.87%, the 1x Autumn Egg sits at 24.60%, the Carved Swingseat rises to 10.01%, and the 3x Autumn Seed Pack rises to 6.45%. At seed score 5, the Maple Melt Seed is already at 2.13%, up from 0.1% at the bottom.
Scarecrow Pet Chance by Seed Score
| Seed Score | Scarecrow Chance |
| 1 | 0.30% |
| 2 | 0.36% |
| 3 | 0.60% |
| 4 | 1.20% |
| 5 | 2.29% |
| 6 | 3.82% |
| 7 | 5.53% |
| 8 | 7.15% |
| 9 | 8.50% |
| 10 | 9.54% |
Going from score 1 to score 10 multiplies your Scarecrow chance by roughly 32. Even the best case is under 10% per roll, so treat the pet as a long-game target, not a sure thing.
Which Seed Should You Give the Shady Scarecrow?
Short answer: the highest-rarity seed you can spare, ideally with a variant.
My reasoning, based on how the odds scale:
- Don’t waste early rolls on junk seeds if the pet is your goal. A score-1 roll gives you a 0.3% Scarecrow chance. A score-10 roll gives 9.54%.
- Quality beats quantity here. Because of the 10-minute cooldown, you can only make so many submissions in a session, so each one should count.
- Check variants before you submit. A seed with a variant can lift your score above an identical plain seed.
- Use filler seeds only for filler goals. If you just want Autumn Seed Packs or Rosy Root, cheap seeds still pay out fine.
The exact rarity-to-score mapping isn’t fully confirmed yet, so treat the “best seed” advice as a direction, not a formula. If the devs rebalance the table in a patch, the numbers above may shift.
What Does the Scarecrow Pet Do?
The Scarecrow is a Divine pet with 100,000 hunger. Its passive is called Farewell Crows. Roughly every 18 and a half minutes, it makes one Crow pet in your garden fly away for good, and that sacrifice ages up a random pet by 1.

That trade-off matters. The Crow does not come back. So before you hatch or equip a Scarecrow, make sure you own spare Crows you are happy to lose. Crows came from the Halloween event, so they are not something you can farm on demand right now.
If you want to speed up your pet roster, the Scarecrow is a powerful age engine. If you only own a single prized Crow, it is a risky pick.
Maple Melt Seed and the Fall Shovel
The Maple Melt Seed is a Fall Market plant, and the Shady Scarecrow is its only source. It is also one of the plants counted in the Fall Collection.
That connects to the Fall Shovel, a shovel skin exclusive to this event. You unlock it by reaching at least 80% completion of the Fall Market Collection. Maple Melt is a hard item to land (0.1% at the lowest score), so it is the entry most players will be missing when they chase that 80% mark.
Is the Shady Scarecrow the Same as the Scarecrow in Grow a Garden 2?
No. This is a common mix-up. In Grow a Garden 2, the Scarecrow is a Mythic pet from the Exclusive Harvest Egg. It guards your garden and locks anyone who steals from you for a short time. The Grow a Garden (original) Scarecrow is a Divine pet from the Shady Scarecrow, and its job is aging up other pets.

Same name, different game, different mechanic. Everything in this guide applies to the original Grow a Garden.
How Long Will the Shady Scarecrow Be Available?
It arrived with the Fall Market finale on October 3, 2026, and no end date has been announced. Fall Market content has been limited-time in past runs, so don’t sit on your best seeds forever. If you want the Scarecrow pet or Maple Melt, use your spare high-rarity seeds while the event is live, and keep an eye on what changed in Part 2 of the event too.
Pet hunters who already finished this event’s grind can also look at the Beanstalk Bear, the pet from the Beanstalk finale, to round out their roster.
